Allanbank Mill Steading is situated in the special rural open landscape of the Scottish Borders. It is the home and studios of the artists, Pauline Burbidge and Charlie Poulsen. They have lovingly renovated this set of farm buildings, converting them from farm use to studios, for their art practice.
Pauline works with textiles, collage and stitch, making wall hangings and quilts. Charlie makes large scale drawings, sculpture and ‘growing sculpture’. Together they have created and developed a magical and unique environment of gardens, studios and home.
OPEN STUDIO
In the summer they hold a very special four day event called ‘Charlie & Pauline’s OPEN STUDIO’; this will mark their 27th year! They turn their studios into galleries and display artwork throughout the Steading, and show a selection of their own work, together with the work of one guest artist. This coming year we are looking forward to welcoming Ilona Rijkeboer, who will be travelling from the Netherlands to show with us. She is a recent graduate and she explores drawing and installation and aims to build a gallery space in which visitors will be invited to intervene and create. Visitors arrive, they discover and explore the studios and garden, their smiles tell the story of a special day out – a chance to view the artworks and garden, and gain a personal view of the environment in which the artwork has been made.
Our OPEN STUDIO and other events listed below are postponed this year due to COVID–19 restrictions. However, all events will be re-scheduled in 2021. The new OPEN STUDIO dates are 6th – 9th August 2021.
